Cheap, Good Privacy Solutions
It’s been a while that I wanted to write a brief recap of the alternative solutions I use for privacy. I tend to avoid Google products, but I also keep an eye on the price. One always can’t have all (privacy and a good service), but I think I’ve found some good compromises.
Email: Tuta
I’ve been a Tutanota Tuta customer for some years, and I still have their old fee: €1/month.
It was very convenient for the quality of the application, but the current fee (€3/month) of the Revolutionary plan is more than acceptable.
Also, the free account is enough if you, like me, tend to not archive emails.1
Note: I recently found Posteo as an alternative, and it is very interesting for the same cheap price!
VPN: Mullvad
One of the best products, they really take their job seriously. The fee is simple: €5/month. They have clients for any Operating Systems, and it just works very well.
Their browser, a Firefox fork, is awesome too. Not perfect for everyday use, but overall excellent.
Photos: Ente
I’ve looked around a lot for a good Google Photos replacement, and I think Ente is currently the best not-self-hosted option. It is very simple to set up, and the prices are fair (currently, you can also have 5GB for free for a year!).
To be honest, I’m not still using it because an important feature (for me, at least) is missing, but I think I’ll give it another chance soon.
They also provide maybe the best Two-Factor Authentication App for iOS. Check it out!
And then, quickly, the essentials…
- Firefox as web browser, instead of Chrome
- DuckDuckGo as search engine (even if it depends too much on Bing, which is evil), instead of, you know… Google
- Obsidian as note-taking tool instead of Keep
…There would be much more things to say, but that was a good start. These may not be the best options, but they are indeed good, and cheap.
🎮 nothing!
🎧 Some more TOOL
📖 Finished Solaris - wonderful!

Also, as a bonus, their spam filter is very strict and efficient! ↩︎
