Closer to Dad
Since the days are getting shorter, I can finally enjoy our new home a bit more. In the past three months, I’ve been working on several projects that were completely new to me: a fence with three wooden gates, stone walls, a car shelter… even a wooden door. I had to become an amateur electrician, carpenter, woodworker, and plumber. Most of all, I’m happy because I’m proud of what I’ve done.
No, that’s not true; pride is not the main positive aspect. The real good thing is that I’ve spent a lot of time with my dad. He enjoyed helping me with these projects a lot, and did much more than he should have at his age. He is tough, and he says that he has lots of fun while creating something, like in these cases, but his golden heart makes it difficult to tell if he’s tired — he’ll always be there for my brothers and me, even if there is a mountain to move.
About that, while talking with my eldest brother, we agreed that none of us can say we spent a lot of time with our dad — not through his fault or choice; it just happened that each of us had a good portion of life… away. Probably these months have been the closest experience I have had with him. We’ve lived together in the same house for years; we’ve eaten countless times at the same table… but we shared this experience, and I’m hugely grateful for that.
He taught me a lot, and one of my greatest fears is not showing him enough gratitude. One only recognizes the importance of some acts after too much time, or at least this is true for me. I am so slow from this point of view.
Luckily, I feel that last year we strengthened our relationship, so I can say I have a few fewer regrets. As I read in a book a few months ago:
The real aches of old age are regrets.
Good, we’re making slow progress.
