Iced Lemon Tea
Spring has sprung1 here in Northern Italy. Finally. I had planned to enjoy the cold months playing some video games, writing more… but none of that happened. Well, that’s not completely true: there has been a short story – the first one in more than a year! – and I figured out how to play Windows games on my Mac… but nothing serious.
Back to work, I bought a four-meter-long tree pruner, and we used it a lot. In the last two or three years, we cut a lot of wood. Too much. The trees had loads of dead branches, and we had to chop a huge quantity of twigs and whole trees.
This spring, luckily, we started to see the results of the care we had put in: the deadwood was much less. I organized the largest pieces in a pile to dry2 and, with the smallest ones, I am creating a sort of natural fence at the edge of the woods. We’ll see if the animals stop coming up from there from all directions. I’d like to create a couple of paths for them away from the house.
The other day, as I entered the kitchen for merenda time, I poured myself a glass of cold lemon tea… and I smiled while recalling one of my maternal grandfather’s habits. He liked to have a bottle of lemon tea in the fridge, so in the hot afternoon he would come home to have some.
My grandma told me that every morning she prepared hot tea with a couple of bags, then she put some sugar and, once cooled down, poured it into a bottle and placed it in the fridge. I have many fond memories of that kitchen. I remember many times being there with my grandma, but I can’t recall any with my grandpa. Strange.
Anyway, we’ve been… (cultivating? keeping?) a kombucha fungus for a couple of years, or maybe more. We keep the fermented tea in the fridge, and I was pouring that when the memories came to me. It may not be the same tea, but I’m sure that grandpa would agree about the merenda. And I think he would like the work we did around the house.
🎮 I tried to complete a full match of Balatro, but I keep failing :(
🎧 Among the many bands I listened to, I find Cabfighter awesome!
📖 I listened to the latest episode of the Witcher saga, and I loved it
