2025's First Half - Alternatives

In the last few weeks, I started using more alternative products for my daily routine in front of the computer. Here is a brief list with my opinions, hoping to help someone make a little change.

Kagi and Orion

Kagi is a new search engine which I switched to from DuckDuckGo. It is simple, fast, and has a cool integration with an AI summarizer. It also provide a super duper translation tool which I love.

They also develop Orion, a browser for iOS and macOS alternative to Safari. I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks, and I think it is super fast and handy on mobile, but on desktop Firefox is still a few steps ahead. Too bad that the latter is horrible on iOS.

Linkding

For the self-hosting lovers, Linkding is a substitute for Pocket, or Wallabag. It is a bookmark manager to organize the links by tags. It has a clean UI and has handy integrations with SinglePage (a browser extension that allows to saving a web page in a… single file) and Internet Archive. It is also super lightweight.

Last interesting note: you can share your bookmarks in a public page. Here are mine (for now there are just a couple because I’m still testing it).

LogSeq… but not really

While reading about a simple markdown paper, I stumbled upon the complex world of LogSeq. I already use Obsidian, and I understood the differences between the two… but it is quite hard to change the mentality with how one writes down notes.

I’m still experimenting with work annotations, and I will keep on for the next few days… but for now, I think I’ll stick with Obsidian.

BookPlayer for iOS

I’ve found the best audiobook player for iOS, and it is very easy to send audiobooks to the device via AirDrop.

To be honest, I don’t like audiobooks very much, but while working near the new house, I started listening to The Witcher saga. It is awesome. I know these are big words, but… it could be better than Tolkien’s Middle-Earth saga. 👀
