Happiness and Misadventures

Allgäu - Lots of Love

This September, my girlfriend and I had a seven-days vacation in Southern Germany, in Allgäu. It is a lovely region because, first, people are very friendly. Second, it is heaven for hikers or lovers of MTB. Imagine a plateau at about 800 meters above sea level: if you look at the north, you can see gentle hills and large pastures. At the south, you can see the Alps, and you can reach them in 10 minutes.

This post will be a little different: it will be a mini-guide with a couple of suggestions. It’s the second time we visited this region, and now we can say that we really like it. If you prefer the countryside than the city, you’ll love it; otherwise, better avoid planning vacations here.

East and West

Both the times, we stayed in two different places, at about one hour driving. In the western part of Allgäu, a nice base for hikes on lower hills would be near Oberstaufen or Oberreute. They are villages almost on the border with Austria, and there are many trails across it. You can just walk, or take a cable car to reach the top of the mountains. Also, there are dozens of paths towards northern green hills.

Tip: if you are around there, you should eat at Fezzo. Really.

Then, after two or three days at least, you could move to the East, near Füssen, and visit the countryside there. Of course, you can’t avoid visiting Europe’s most popular castle, Neuschwanstein, but I warn you: the visit itself lasts less than thirty minutes, is very expensive, and you’re not allowed to make even a photo inside. It is indeed beautiful, but also overestimated in my opinion.

If you want to visit a real castle, you can hike to Hohenfreyberg for free, and it is six-centuries older.

In both areas, there are cable-cars that allow you to visit the Alps and walk at ~1800 meters on very well-marked paths. Super-recommended!

Walk, Walk, and Walk

As I already said, hikers and bikers will find beautiful tracks. We used Bergfex app to find routes, and there are dozens, for both beginners and experts. Also, check out Outdooractive, which has some extra feature.

In a week, we walked an average of 17 kilometres per day! We usually suffer the elevation difference in trails, so these sweet hills are just perfect.

Snow? Even Better

The first time we’ve been there was before Christmas 2022, and everything was covered in white. There are lots of well-marked winter trails, and we loved the atmosphere – and the silence. In the woods, you can just hear the trees cracking and the birds chirping.

For me, that is a vacation. And I fell in love with this place.
