Keeping On
Since we moved into the new house, I’ve been working outside almost every day. There’s so much to do, but finally we can see some major changes.
The fence can finally be finished after months of waiting: the builder abruptly stopped answering my phone calls, and abandoned piles of garbage on our property. After waiting, and waiting,… I made some trips to the junkyard and got rid of most of that. Now I can build the last two gates and keep the wild boars away from the house.
About wild animals, it’s wonderful to see quite a few unexpected neighbors wandering around the house. Almost every morning, while having breakfast, we see from the windows:
- A couple of squirrels
- A mother roe deer with two fawns
- Two hares
Sadly, at night we had for weeks the worst next-door companions: dormice. They got into our wooden roof about two months ago, and we fought a long battle to get rid of them. Now, after many sleepless nights and trips to the rooftop, it seems they’re gone… but we can’t be sure. These are the weeks when they should hibernate, maybe they’re just silent. We tried repellents, traps… I was really desperate because we asked anyone –I really mean it!–, but only a couple of people gave us sensible advice. Let’s hope for the best.
About the work the builder left unfinished, I ended up asking my father and my uncle for help. They’re almost eighty years old, but they offered without hesitation. They’re always happy to help, and I sincerely had some of the best moments with them: a warm day full of satisfying work, jokes in dialect, and a lunch together. These are just the best days.
