My Personal Indy
I was quite an amoeba until a few years ago. That’s it. If I were on my own, making my own choices day by day, I’d probably never step out of my comfort zone. Maybe I’m a coward, but honestly I think I was grown in laziness and routine. Dangerous life at its finest.
Luckily for me, my girlfriend changed our approach to vacations a lot. So, during these trips, there’s always been a struggle between her, who would like to do crazy things, and me, who would like to enjoy the holidays as a calm person.
Like I said, it was luck for me. I realized, after too much time, what I was (and maybe still am?) missing.
We had several misadventures, more or less funny, mostly linked to our passion for Geocaching. From 2015–16 on, we made several trips without following usual itineraries and routes, but just geocaching trails. An example was Bretagne, in northwestern France. We found more than 100 caches in less than two weeks, and we saw some splendid spots very easy to miss otherwise. We just followed the app on the smartphone and looked for the dozens of cache trails around the woods or the coast. The French GC community was already amazing ten years ago!
Another great example, near Lake Maggiore in Italy, was the actual urban exploration of an abandoned youth camp from the Fascist era. The overwhelming vegetation on the walls, the rotting ceilings, the abandoned pools, weird creaking noises… It was a goosebumps experience! There were geocaches too, of course, but we were too scared to find any!
Anyway, one of the best adventures we had, in the broader sense of the term, was again in France, in Dordogne. I already wrote about it, and it does not seem three years have passed… We made a trip on the Dordogne River by canoe, sleeping in a tent. The water level was quite low, but we had our dose of chills due to a few rapids and a very stupid curve we made trying to reach a cave from the river… We fell from the canoe and swam to push it near the riverbed.
It won’t be much, but for me these trips are adventurous. She just showed me a crazy bridge in Wales, and we’re again discussing… but over time I’ve become a bit less tenacious. My girlfriend is my personal Indiana Jones, and I’m somehow her Marcus Brody.
